Project Management: Recent IT Activities

New office build and move:

Coordinated the build of a new office space from bare bones to move-in condition with regards to IT infrastructure. This included:

- Office and cubicle cabling for voice/data/electrical.

- Preparation for internet services, private data links, telephony lines to be made ready for cutover.

- Server room physical layout and electrical, cabling and other services.

- Phone system installation and upgrade.

- Access control systems and video surveillance systems installation.

I was also responsible for leading the team carrying out the office move, which had to be completed over a weekend and involved over a hundred servers, nearly 50 pieces of networking and other gear, and three interconnected environments (Development, QA, and Corporate IT infrastructure). The move was very successful and we were ready for business as usual by 6 a.m. Monday morning.

Corporate website redesign.

Migration to latest version of Blackberry Enterprise Server and rollout of new smart phones to staff with little or no down-time.

Telephony, Security Systems, and Cabling:

Managed the cabling of a multi-site facility into a campus network environment via fiber optic cable.

Set up and installation of NOC-style network/server monitoring data displayed on a number of large screen TVs.

Network documentation.

In a complex network almost devoid of labels, drawings, or other documentation, I led an effort to identify the purpose of every network cable, label both ends of each one, document the entire system, and set up a system of change tracking.

Network equipment refresh and architecture redesign for increased security and manageability.

Upgrade/installation of customer application servers in the Netherlands for distribution to their embassies in various parts of the world.

Network Administration, Network Installation, and User Support

Support for up to 200 users at various office locations and environments as the sole or primary administrator (up to 450 users as part of a support team).
Support and maintenance of up to 150 production servers as the sole or primary administrator.
Troubleshooting of security and telephony systems and carrying out of adds, moves, and changes.
Conducting business continuity planning and disaster recovery administration - ensuring clients have robust tape and/or external USB hard drive backup systems, and that rotation schedules and documentation are kept current.
Website design and maintenance (good familiarity with HTML and PHP).
Design, implementation, and maintenance of all common IT systems: Windows Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, anti-virus servers, access control and video surveillance servers, email systems (Exchange and BES server as well as various email relay technologies), remote access technologies, phone systems, web servers, etc.

Conquest Computers serviced a very fast-paced niche market in the Film Production industry in the GTA. We provided a wide range of rental equipment (desktop and laptop PCs and MACs, networking gear, printers, and other miscellaneous computer equipment and peripherals), network design and installations, support for networks, hardware, and users, server maintenance, etc. We also occasionally serviced other industry clients as well.

Managed all aspects of the business as it related to support services, technical sales, equipment rentals, hardware purchasing, directing technical and clerical staff.
Oversaw the maintenance of Conquest Computers’ own hardware – this included general maintenance, hardware upgrades, hardware and software cleanup after rentals, preparing equipment to client specifications, etc.
Planned, organized, and implemented time-sensitive office rollouts and recoveries. This generally encompassed setting up a production company’s office suite with computer hardware, network cabling, file and print sharing, email and internet access, etc., at the beginning of production, and disassembling the entire office upon completion of the production.
Administered and provided 24-7 technical support availability for our clients’ networks, computers, software, and users. During the filming of the feature film, Cinderella Man, the number of users we supported peaked at about 200 at various office and “on location” film shoot sites.

Worked in a large, high security Data Center on a team that provided 2^nd and 3^rd level network support. The network is a true multi-vendor, multi-platform environment (Mainframe, Unix, NT/2000, AS/400), and support is provided across all platforms to both the company’s and their clients’ networks.
Assisted in the team’s troubleshooting duties using various vendor management tools, network sniffers, and cable analyzers and tracers.
Participated in several projects, acting as lead in portions of some of them, to enhance network security, establish code and configuration standards for the company’s network devices, and implement the relevant changes across the network.

Assisted in a refinery-wide network backbone upgrade, installing new hubs, switches, and cabling, and testing the network devices after the upgrade had been made.
Completed a major project to find, map, and label all network cables and devices in the refinery.
Participated in several smaller projects including network security improvements and the provision of intranet video streaming of some plant monitoring equipment.
